Don’t refrigerate immediately
Try this instead!
They’ll stay fresh even after a week
The vegetable that the Home Brother is currently obsessed with is the tomato. Among all the varieties like Sweet Tomato, Stevia Tomato, and Large Tomato, the Stevia Tomato has captured the Home Brother’s heart!
Can we call it the Shine Muscat of the cherry tomato world? It’s so sweet that I can’t eat many, but it’s so delicious that I reach for it every day.
So, I stocked up a few when they were on sale… Why didn’t I think cherry tomatoes would spoil quickly? I love the bursting texture when you bite into a cherry tomato. But after a while, the cherry tomatoes started to get mushy, those little things…
I was looking for a way to keep cherry tomatoes fresh and found a method to keep them for a long time, so I brought it to share with you.
After reading this, promise to store them like Home Brother taught you. Let’s get started now!
Do you refrigerate cherry tomatoes as soon as you buy them?
The answer is NO! After buying cherry tomatoes, we usually put them directly into the fridge’s fresh-keeping compartment. But if you do this, the cherry tomatoes will quickly become mushy.
If you refrigerate cherry tomatoes, the lycopene decreases, the sweetness drops and the skin thickens. So, it’s better to store them at room temperature than refrigerate!
STEP 1. Washing Cherry Tomatoes
Should you wash and store cherry tomatoes? Doesn’t washing make them mushy? You might think so, but washing off residual pesticides is better.
Just rinsing cherry tomatoes under running water is enough, so please wash them thoroughly first.
STEP 2. Removing Cherry Tomato Stems
Once you’ve washed the cherry tomatoes, removing each stem is good.
Removing the stem prevents the absorption of nutrients through the stem and prevents rotting that can occur due to the stem. So, the sweetness is maintained, and the firmness lasts longer, so removing the stem is a must.
If you’ve been thinking you should remove the stem when you eat it, remember to remove it before storing too.
STEP 3. Wiping with a Kitchen Towel
If you put them in the refrigerator as is, they will naturally become mushy quickly. Please carefully wipe off the moisture from the cherry tomatoes with a kitchen towel!
STEP 4. Storing in an Airtight Container
Once you’ve thoroughly wiped off the moisture, it’s time to store them in an airtight container.
Before storing them in an airtight container, lay a few kitchen towels and put the cherry tomatoes on top. Giving them ample space is better than having them stick together!
If you have more cherry tomatoes left, lay another kitchen towel on top and store them on it.
The good thing about washing and storing them this way is that you can take them out and eat them immediately without having to rewash them.
STEP 5. Refrigerate
Once you’ve removed the stems and wiped off the moisture with a kitchen towel, you can refrigerate them.
If you buy a large quantity of cherry tomatoes and think you’ll still eat them after a week, try changing the kitchen towel every 3-4 days.
You can enjoy them fresh for 2-3 weeks, isn’t that a great tip? From now on, if you store cherry tomatoes this way, you’ll only eat fresh cherry tomatoes, right?
Home Brother taught you how to store cherry tomatoes for a long time today. It was interesting to learn that you should remove and wash the stems before storing them!
Home Brother also tried removing and storing the stems, and surprisingly, there were significantly fewer mushy cherry tomatoes. Throwing away spoiled tomatoes was a waste, so it was great.
Try storing them this way, and let’s only eat fresh tomatoes.
