The Story of a Woman Who Discovered Her Fiancé’s Criminal Record Before Marriage

A woman is considering breaking up after discovering her soon-to-be husband’s previous sex offense.

On the 12th, a JTBC show, Crime Chief, featured a story from a woman in her mid-30s, identified as Ms. A, who discovered her boyfriend’s criminal past while preparing for their wedding.

Ms. A was six months away from marrying a man one year her senior whom she had met four years ago. The couple had already held their formal engagement ceremony and had mostly finished their wedding preparations.

Ms. A described her boyfriend as “incomparable to my previous partners. We have similar values and thought processes. He’s considerate and careful with his words,” and added, “he’s introverted and doesn’t enjoy drinking, so there were no issues with him acting out when drunk.”

However, Ms. A recently found out that her boyfriend had been fined 2 million won (approximately US$1,700) for a lewd act using a communication medium. He explained, “A year ago, I was sued for cursing in a game chat. They demanded 10 million won (approximately US$8,500). I couldn’t settle, so I was punished and paid 2 million won.”

But Ms. A was shocked. Her boyfriend had never told her about his past offense. He had even maintained a clean image in front of her, never using foul language.

Eventually, Ms. A asked her boyfriend to show her the judgment document, but he angrily responded, “Doesn’t how I’ve acted and spoken for the past four years mean anything? Is this all I am? I can’t do this anymore because of my pride.”

Upon hearing this, former Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s International Crime Investigation Team leader Kim Eun-bae advised, “While it’s wrong that the man has a criminal record, he’s not a violent or serious offender. There’s no such thing as a perfect man. Watching his future actions could also be a solution.”

On the other hand, Park Sang-hee, the director of Sharon Mental Health Institute, warned, “It’s dangerous. You need to know what kind of mistake led to his criminal record. The problem is that he lied. What if there’s an unexpected violent side to him after marriage? You can’t just ignore it.”
