Volkswagen’s Electric Game-Changer: Affordable Electric Car Set to Hit U.S. Market

globalautonews Views

Reinhard Fischer, Volkswagen Group’s product strategy officer, announced at the Reuters event, Mobile Automotive USA 2023 Conference held in the U.S., that they plan to launch a battery electric vehicle in the U.S. market for less than $35,000 within 3-4 years. He revealed they are exploring ways to source battery packs locally to be eligible for a tax deduction of up to $7,500. Despite competitors like Ford and GM delaying their investments, Fischer added that they have no plans to scale down their electric vehicle initiatives in the U.S. market.

Volkswagen is selling the ID.4 in the U.S. market with a starting price of $38,995 and eight different trims. The driving range varies from 209 miles to 275 miles. Volkswagen also plans to launch the ID. Buzz, a three-row electric minivan, next year. The price has not been disclosed yet, but it is expected to start around $60,000.

The flagship ID.7, set to launch in the U.S. market next year, has a starting price of $62,000. The ID.4 is already being produced in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and is receiving IRA tax deductions.

Following Tesla’s announcement of a $25,000 model last spring, Volkswagen unveiled the ID 2all concept (pictured above) priced at 26,000 euros.
