Apple Halts iOS 18, macOS 15, and More: How Will It Impact Users?

Daniel Kim Views

Apple

In September, Apple launched iOS 17 just a week after unveiling the iPhone 15 lineup. This new operating system was released to coincide with the launch of the iPhone 15. Those who purchase the iPhone 15 will receive a device with the new operating system installed. The iOS 17 comes packed with quite a few useful features.

One of the features that many are talking about is the ‘standby mode’ feature. This feature lets you turn your iPhone into a smart display when connected to a wireless charging dock. The smart display can show various items such as time, alarm, calendar, and media controls. Another interesting feature that caught the attention was the ability to create stickers with your photos.

iPhone 15 Users Who Own BMW Cars Express Discontent… Charging Bug Continues

MacRumors

The problem is that after the iOS 17 update, numerous bugs are continuously being reported among users. Especially at the end of September,

there was controversy when iPhone 15 users who used BMW’s wireless charging pad discovered that the NFC chip was broken. Users who voiced their complaints stated that the iPhone 15’s NFC chip did not work after using the vehicle’s wireless charging pad. The NFC chip enables several key features, such as Apple Pay and digital smart keys. However, when users tried to use these features and opened the Apple Wallet app, they were greeted with an error message saying, ‘Cannot set up Apple Pay.’

Even after turning the device off and on again, it still did not work. Eventually, some users belatedly discovered that the NFC chip was broken and received a replacement device, but the underlying problem remained unresolved unless they changed their vehicle.

Interestingly, the same issue occurred in some BMW models and some Toyota Supra vehicles. This added weight to the speculation that the cause was Apple’s operating system, not BMW’s wireless charging pad. Eventually, Apple admitted the wireless charging issue in BMW vehicles with the iPhone 15 series at the end of last month and promised to resolve it with a future software update.

Bugs Even Occur on MacBooks… Apple Temporarily Halts Next Software Development

MacRumors

However, these software errors are not only occurring on iPhones. To make matters worse, even the MacBook OS is causing issues. On October 31 (local time), Apple unveiled the MacBook Pro with the M3 chip, M3 Pro, and M3 Max chip. Around the same time, they released macOS14.1.

However, this also showed various errors. On some MacBooks, even though they clearly support macOS 14.1, there was no new software available when checking the software information. In addition, when running Photoshop, there were frequent bugs where the most crucial toolset section could not be clicked. Eventually, with bugs occurring one after another in both iPhones and MacBooks, Apple had to make a decision.

MacRumors

On November 8 (local time), according to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple temporarily halted the next software development for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices. According to insiders familiar with the matter, this decision was made due to a surge in bugs in the initial versions. Engineers are focusing more on modifying existing software and improving performance rather than developing new software. As a result of the company’s decision, the development of iOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, and tvOS 18 has been temporarily halted.

When Is the User Update Schedule? Still Likely to Proceed as Planned

There has been growing concern that the update schedule will be delayed because Apple has temporarily halted the following software development. Fortunately, the impact on the consumer’s update schedule is expected to be minimal. According to Bloomberg, Apple’s next software development halt is expected to end this week.

Moreover, the company completed the first version of the next iPhone, iPad, and Mac operating systems last month. Meanwhile, as planned, Apple plans to release iPhone iOS 17.4 and watchOS 11 in March next year. Until now, Apple has been distributing iOS 17.1.1 and macOS 14.1.1 and making every effort to resolve the bugs.
