This year, on 6 June, Finnair, the national airline of Finland, which turned to profit, has set a goal of surpassing 10 million passengers annually. Notably, this achievement was made by overcoming difficulties such as COVID-19 and the closure of Russian airspace.
Finnair held a press conference at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul to celebrate its 100th anniversary. At the scene were Ole Orver, Finnair’s Chief Commercial Officer, Jenni Suomela, Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Channel Operations, and Kim Dong-hwan, the head of the Korean office. Finnair, which made its first flight to Korea in June 2008, currently operates daily flights on the Seoul-Helsinki route. It provides various benefits to celebrate its 100th anniversary, including new liquor service, onboard bedding and tableware, and producing souvenirs.

Regarding the turnaround to profit in June this year, Ole Orver said, “Large-scale investments and continuous network expansions have contributed to overcoming the crisis“ and explained, “We have secured transit demand through new routes and succeeded in diversifying revenue structures. “ Last year, Finnair expanded its routes to Dallas, Seattle, and Doha in the Americas and Middle East. It plans to resume its Nagoya, Japan route, suspended due to COVID-19, in the winter season next year. Finnair announced it is investing 270 billion KRW ($225 million) in renewing A350 and A330 aircraft cabins even amid COVID-19. It has deployed the renovated A350 on the Seoul-Helsinki route since last September. It has implemented establishing a new premium economy class, introducing new business class seats, and enhancing the economy class in-flight entertainment system. All cabin renovations are expected to be completed by May 2024. Ole Orver said, “Finnair’s cabin renovation has not only received positive responses from passengers but also won the ‘Best Cabin Innovation’ category from the global airline evaluation agency APEX (APEX), recognizing its excellence from industry experts.”
