When IKEA Mocks Balenciaga: The ‘Towel Skirt’ Showdown

IKEA Takes a Friendly Jab at Balenciaga

On November 16th (Korean time), IKEA UK’s official Instagram account posted a photo that seemed to be aimed at Balenciaga, drawing attention.

The photo, which seems to promote a new product, features a man in sunglasses, a black hoodie, beige pants, and a towel tied around his waist.

Next to him, the product name VINARN and a description ‘towel skirt’ are written, with a price of $16 (based on UK currency) indicated.

Locals who saw the photo burst into laughter.

This is because IKEA employees have copied the outfit worn by a Balenciaga model in their Spring 2024 collection, which featured a ‘towel skirt.’

The IKEA model even mimicked the pose of hands tucked into the hoodie pocket and a chic, expressionless face. However, there was a big difference in price as Balenciaga’s skirt costs over 1 million KRW (about $840), while IKEA’s towel is much cheaper.

Local netizens with a keen eye quickly recognized the photo and exclaimed, “Wow,” “IKEA is a genius,” “Take that, Balenciaga!”, “Great post by IKEA,” “Very symbolic,” and “BalenciIKEA.”

It was revealed that what the IKEA model is wearing is not a new skirt product but a towel that IKEA has been selling.

The carry shopper bag priced at 2 million KRW (about $1,680) was launched by Balenciaga in 2017 (left), and IKEA’s FRAKTA bag priced at 1,000 KRW (about $0.84) (right) / Balenciaga IKEA website

Some see IKEA’s playful jab as a comeback from a previous issue.

This is because Balenciaga launched a bag in 2017 that seemed inspired by IKEA’s shopping bag. The carry shopper bag, priced at around US$1,680, reminded people of the FRAKTA bag sold by IKEA for $0.89 for shopping purposes and became a topic of discussion. The Balenciaga product is made of sheepskin and calf leather, while the IKEA is made of polypropylene.

People who saw the situation of IKEA and Balenciaga facing off with similar products again said, “IKEA looks more hip because of the background LOL,” “But what’s the difference LOL,” “The fact that it’s a towel? They were already selling is so funny,” “The crease in the towel bothers me LOL,” “I wonder what Balenciaga thinks about this…?”.

Some even joked, “Okay, Daiso, it’s your turn,” “Daiso can do it for $2”, “Daiso, what are you doing? Come on”.
