A man who deceived a jewelry store employee by claiming to be close friends with the owner and then ran off with a gold bracelet has been apprehended by the police.
Recently, the Seoul Police released CCTV footage taken from a jewelry store in Jungnang-gu, Seoul, on the 14th of last month on their official Facebook account.
According to the police, the man entered the store waving his hand. He introduced himself as the owner of a coffee shop on the first floor and asked the employee to show him a gold bracelet for a wedding gift.
The man claims that he is close friends with the owner of the store and that his wife will come to make the payment in the afternoon.
The employee sensed something suspicious and called the owner, but the owner did not pick up. Upon this, the man retorted, “You don’t believe me?”
Eventually, the employee handed over a gold bracelet worth 8.2 million won (approximately $6,100), and the man escaped by taxi.
Not long after, the employee who realized that she had been deceived reported it to the police. Detectives who arrived at the scene confirmed the suspect’s appearance and escape method through CCTV footage.
The police discovered that the criminal had paid the taxi fare with a card and pursued the criminal by finding the convenience store where he last used the card.
The criminal was apprehended by detectives who were staking out near his residence two days later.
The police confirmed that the man had committed a total of about 16 million won (approximately $12,000) in fraud using the same method and arrested him.
