Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that “childbirth” is inherently part of a woman’s destiny.

According to Yonhap News, on the 7th (local time), the Russian news agency, TASS, reported that President Putin said “A woman’s destiny is to carry on the family lineage, which is a unique gift of nature,” in a speech at the closing ceremony of the World Youth Festival held near Sochi, Russia, the day before.

President Putin emphasized, “We support childbirth with great respect,” highlighting that Russia is implementing various policies to support motherhood and parenting.

He also stated that a decrease in the birth rate is a serious issue in all national sectors, including the economy, and hence, “the role of women is important.”

President Putin has then expressed concern over the declining birth rate in Russia in recent years. Last month, he said, “Each family should have at least two children for the survival of the country and at least three for the development and prosperity of the nation.”

On the same day, President Putin also made remarks encouraging women’s social advancement, which was one day ahead of International Women’s Day (March 8), one of Russia’s important holidays.

He said, “In Russia, women play an important role in the nation, but unfortunately, there are not many women in the government. The more women in the government, the better because women are more meticulous and responsible in a good sense.”

Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova, whom President Putin introduced as a representative female bureaucrat, said in a separate speech on the same day, “The ideal age to start a family is between 18 and 24. Up to 24 is the most suitable age to have a child.”
