It was confirmed on the 8th that North Korea attempted to jam Global Positioning System (GPS) signals in response to the regular US-South Korea joint training Freedom Shield (FS).

The Joint Chiefs of Staff detected several GPS jamming signals fired by North Korea towards the Five West Sea Islands from noon on the 5th to the 7th. However, it was reported that no significant damage occurred as the output of the GPS jamming signal launched this time was weak.

North Korea has intermittently attempted to jam GPS signals since 2010. In April 2016, during the 20th general elections, they carried out high-output radio jamming, affecting domestic location information services and ship navigation.

North Korea is containing the FS exercise by publicly revealing Kim Jong Un’s military training inspections for two consecutive days.

Kim Jong Un inspected the artillery fire training of the North Korean People’s Army combined forces on the previous day. The Korean Central News Agency reported that “long-range artillery units near the borderline, carrying out the significant military mission of deterring war by keeping the enemy’s capital within striking range” participated in the training.

In fact, it appears that this time long-range artillery training of the North Korean military is conducted to target the capital area, including Seoul. Our military was identifying and monitoring the North Korean military’s artillery fire conducted in the Nampo area of South Pyongan Province the previous day.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff stated, “The North Korean military carried out dozens of rounds of artillery and self-propelled gun firing training targeting the West Sea from around 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. yesterday in the Nampo area. Our military has been monitoring and tracking related activities from training preparation, such as equipment deployment, to firing.”

The Joint Chiefs of Staff added, “While our military is maintaining a solid joint defense posture, we are closely monitoring North Korea’s signs of provocation and military activities as we carry out the ongoing FS exercise and joint training in a substantial manner. If North Korea commits a provocation, we will respond overwhelmingly and decisively according to the principle of Immediately, Strongly, and Until the end.”
