Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG has announced that its Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package has become the fastest electric vehicle to be produced.
Porsche’s development driver, Lars Kern, set a new record in the electric vehicle category capable of driving public roads on February 23 by recording a lap time of 1 minute and 27.87 seconds at the Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca in California, USA.
Porsche also recently set a new record at the Nurburgring with a pre-production version of the same model. Kern’s lap time of 7 minutes and 7.55 seconds was 26 seconds faster than the Taycan Turbo S equipped with a performance package in August 2022. The Taycan Turbo GT is the fastest four-door model at the Nurburgring, regardless of the powertrain type.
Kevin Giek, the head of the product line, said, “The new records achieved at Laguna Seca and the Nordschleife prove the excellent potential of the Taycan.” He added, “Having a high output is not enough to achieve results on the track. Acceleration, braking performance, cornering grip, aerodynamics, stability, and sophisticated settings must be optimized as a whole package.” Giek emphasized, “Porsche engineers have achieved these conditions with the Taycan Turbo GT and Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package, offering a level of driving dynamics that is a notch higher than the recently unveiled new Taycan.”
Kern said, “I was able to push the Taycan Turbo GT to its limits at the Laguna Seca track,” and added, “The Taycan Turbo GT with the Weissach package has set a new standard in all indicators.” He continued, “It is based on acceleration and braking performance, an intuitively usable attack mode, maximum traction, and a powertrain with maximized performance.” He added, “The tires maintain an appropriate balance in all driving situations with impressive cornering grip levels and excellent control and agility.”
The Taycan Turbo GT can deliver an additional output of up to 120 kW for 10 seconds at the push of a button. Attack Mode, optimized for track driving, is based on the push-to-pass function of other Taycan models². It operates similarly to the Porsche 99X racing car, which participated in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The dashboard’s countdown timer displays the boost, and the speedometer’s animation ring dynamically reflects the stages.³
Attack Mode operates differently from the push-to-pass function, providing 50 kW more boost output. It can be activated through the mode switch on the side of the steering column or the right-hand paddle, making it easy to use on the track. Kern said, “You can activate the boost without taking your hands off the steering wheel, even with racing gloves on,” and added, “The Taycan Turbo GT, with its simple, safe, and fast operation, is designed for racing drivers.” The level of regenerative braking can be set with the left steering wheel paddle and adjusted according to driving conditions.
