NYC’s Culinary Scene Goes Korean: 7 in New York Times’ Top 100

Seven Korean restaurants were among the Top 100 New York Restaurants in 2024, as selected by the New York Times (NYT).

Last week, the NYT announced the top restaurants in New York, placing the Korean restaurant Atomix in fourth place.

The NYT described Atomix as using “new ingredients harvested locally, such as Korean mugwort, constantly experimenting based on tradition, and offering meals accompanied by Korean pottery, textiles, and chopsticks, allowing customers to feel a Korean atmosphere in a broader context.”

Jeju Noodle Bar and Atoboy were ranked 16th and 30th, respectively.

The NYT commented on the Mushroom Ramen sold at Jeju Noodle Bar, stating, “This dish, served with Parmesan foam and lime, is a meal in itself.”

Regarding Atoboy, the NYT wrote that it is “the place that best demonstrates the vision for modern Korean cuisine,” allowing customers to experience excellent Korean course meals.

Other restaurants within the top 100 include Okdongsik, located in Manhattan at 40th, Yoon Haeundae Galbi at 52nd, Oiji Mi at 77th, and Mapo Korean BBQ at 91st.

The pork bone soup sold at Okdongsik was previously selected in the New York Times’ Top 8 Dishes of the Year, announced in December last year. Once again, the NYT praised Okdongsik, saying, “The dish that makes Okdongsik the most valuable place in New York is the pork bone soup,” and “each bowl comes with fluffy white rice and very thinly sliced pork.”

Food critic Peter Wells, who announced the ranking of the top 100 restaurants in New York, stated, “While New York is a metropolis, I tried to find 100 restaurants that represent New York’s neighborhoods and people worth visiting for hungry and curious customers.”
