Geek Chic: Quirky Fashion Trend Increasing Eyewear Sales by 10%

daily Views

Geek chic fashion is characterized by quirky clothing and accessories worn by individuals who immerse themselves in their worlds, paying little attention to everyday life. Glasses are the perfect item to express this style. While glasses were once considered cumbersome, and many opted for contact lenses instead, they have recently surged as a fashion item, leading many to rediscover them.

The emerging geek-chic trend

The recently popular geek chic trend, a portmanteau of geek meaning oddball and chic meaning stylish, is characterized by wearing angular glasses in various forms, such as horn-rimmed or frameless. Many celebrities are showcasing the geek chic look, which is gaining popularity. Thanks to this popularity, the size of the domestic glass frame market has increased by over 10% compared to before, indicating an increase in demand.

Temporarily installed demo lenses

Many fashion glasses sold on the market are equipped with temporary demo lenses made of transparent plastic to maintain the glass frame. These demo lenses are made of low-quality plastic, and the surface is not uniform, so objects and vision can appear distorted, potentially reducing vision.

Oversized glasses are forbidden

For fashion, many people buy oversized glasses, as for clothes, but this should be especially cautious for teenagers in their growth period. As the part of the lens that accurately reflects the prescription for vision correction is the center, the refraction changes towards the periphery, causing unclear vision. When oversized glasses slide down the nose, the position of the pupils can shift away from the center of the lens, resulting in poor vision despite wearing glasses. This could lead to eye fatigue as well as dizziness and headaches.

No UV protection

Also, these demo lenses do not have UV protection, so UV rays pass through the lens without protecting the eyes. Exposure of the eyes to UV rays for a long time can lead to problems in the cornea, and it can also speed up the eyes’ aging by denaturing the protein components of the eyes’ lens.

Can cause contact dermatitis

Fashion glasses that are easy to get may not fit well on your face or nose. If the glasses frame squeezes your face too much, exerting too much pressure on the nose and earlobes, it could leave marks on the skin. Continuous development of marks could induce contact dermatitis. On the other hand, if the glass frame fits loosely, even small movements can cause the glasses to slide down and irritate the skin. Therefore, people with allergies must be more careful when choosing glasses frames.

Points to consider when choosing glass frames

Among the components of glass frames, metals such as cobalt and nickel and plastics such as butyl acrylate, cellulose acetate, and epoxy resin are likely to cause allergies. To prevent the contact dermatitis mentioned earlier, you should not buy glasses frames made of these components, and if you have a metal allergy, it is good to get help from an expert before buying glasses.

Wipe with glasses-specific cloth

If you naturally sweat a lot or it is a season when you sweat a lot, be cautious of sweat accumulating on the areas, such as the nose bridge and the back of the earlobes, where it comes into contact with the glasses. When you sweat a lot, it is very important to remove it as soon as possible and wash it thoroughly. At this time, if you use any random clothes or tissue in a hurry, there is a high probability that micro scratches will occur on the lens surface, so you must wipe it with a glasses-specific cloth.

Be more careful after water play in the summer!

If you play in the water at the beach or somewhere and your glasses touch or fall into the seawater, a large amount of salt can corrode the glass lens and frame. A corroded glass frame can lead to a shortened life of the glasses, so it is good to use it by soaking it in neutral detergent dissolved in water and rinsing it under running water, then wiping it with a glasses-specific cloth.

Storing in a car is forbidden

Many people store sunglasses or glasses in their cars. However, on hot sunny days, the vehicle’s internal temperature can rise to over 70℃ (158℉). As glass lenses are weak to heat, if the lenses are exposed to high temperatures, the lenses can expand, causing cracks in the coating and deformation of the glass frame. If the coating is damaged, glare can occur, and objects can appear distorted, which can cause dizziness. Thus, you must keep them in a glass case in a cool and dry place.

Want to wear expensive glasses for a long time?

When putting on and removing glasses, you should simultaneously hold both sides of the frame to prevent the glasses from twisting. If you remove them with only one side of the frame, the glasses can stretch or twist unevenly, so be careful. Also, if you put on and take off glasses frequently, leave them on the table, or put them in your pocket, they can be scratched or damaged. Therefore, even if it is a little cumbersome, it is recommended to use a dedicated case.
