Bed Next to Toilet: Take a Look Inside the $47 Apartment in Shanghai

A rental apartment in Shanghai, China, with a bed right behind the toilet, was immediately rented out for 300 yuan (approximately $50) monthly, bringing the housing issue in major Chinese cities back into the spotlight.

According to Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post on the 7th, this property was recently featured in a real estate brokerage video in Shanghai, China.

The size of the apartment was a mere 1.5 pyeong (approximately 53 square feet), located in a small space beneath the stairs.

The video shows a living room with limited space, allowing only one person to stand upon entering the front door. In addition, a bedroom combined with a bathroom is on the right, without a window. The tenant must sleep on the floor facing the toilet, and the water heater is hung next to the bed.

The real estate broker joked, “If you add an air conditioner, the rent will increase by 100 yuan (about $16), but it’s completely unnecessary because if you live in such a room, your heart is already cold.”

Despite this, the house was immediately rented to a Chinese shared vehicle driver.

According to the Shanghai Baisen Real Estate Appraisal, the average monthly rent for a one-room apartment in Shanghai exceeds 5134 yuan (about $805).

However, half of Shanghai’s population earns less than 6000 yuan (around $940) a month, and the average monthly salary for service sector jobs such as waiters, security guards, and cashiers is only between 3,500 and 5,000 yuan (approximately $550 to $785).
