Unexpected Aurora Show: Pilot Goes Off Course for Sky Spectacle

Daniel Kim Views

A British pilot made headlines for deviating from the flight path to show all passengers the aurora.

According to CNN, the plane was traveling from Reykjavik, Iceland to Manchester, UK. The pilot of the British low-cost airline easyJet’s flight U21806 performed a 360-degree turn to show all passengers the aurora unfolding over British airspace.

The aurora was visible on the left side of the plane, and passengers seated on the right had to look from a distance. Seeing this, the pilot rotated the plane so that passengers on the right could also see the aurora.

The arrival time was 10 minutes later than scheduled. However, the passengers praised the airplane pilot, saying “It was worth being 10 minutes late.”

Adam Groves, a passenger on the flight, shared this experience on his social media. He said, “I went on a 4-night, 5-day trip to Iceland with my fiancée to see the aurora, but unfortunately, we couldn’t see it.” Groves added, “Having resigned to not seeing the aurora and boarding the plane, thanks to the kind pilot, we saw the best aurora of our lives”, expressing his joy.

Following the incident becoming a talking point, easyJet stated, “We always do our best for our customers,” and “We are glad to have been able to show our passengers this special spectacle.”
