Affordable Luxury? BYD’s Seagull EV Combines High Design with Low Cost

globalautonews Views

China’s BYD plans to launch its $10,000 battery electric car, the Seagull EV, in the European market by 2025. The Seagull EV, priced at $10,000 in the Chinese market, will be equipped with BYD’s 30.08kWh and 38.88kWh LFP Blade batteries. The driving range is 190 miles and 252 miles, respectively, based on the CLTC standard.

The Seagull EV earned the nickname the Mini Lamborghini when Wolfgang Egger, a former Lamborghini designer, led the project. The interior features a 10.1-inch rotating center screen with a minimal design. It can interact and play media through DiLink’s intelligent network.

The Seagull EV, sold under the name Dolphin Mini in overseas markets, is available for around $20,000 in Brazil and $19,800 in Mexico.

Even if the European Union raises tariffs from 10% to 25~30%, it can still be sold for less than $20,000. As Volkswagen and Stellantis are discussing low-cost electric cars in the $25,000 range, BYD is taking the lead. The targets are manufacturers producing compact family cars, like Volkswagen and Stellantis.

BYD is planning to build two factories in Europe and also plans to launch a $27,000 model.

At the 2024 Auto China, BYD unveiled the Sea Lion 07 as its rival to the Tesla Model Y. In addition, it introduced a high-end model from the Yang Wang line, priced at $236,000, to Europe through the Geneva Motor Show last February.

BYD launched an all-around offensive earlier this year, declaring a war of liberation against gasoline cars.
