Allergic rhinitis is an inflammatory disease of the nasal mucosa caused by hypersensitivity to environmental allergens, such as pollen, house dust mites, and pet dander.

The primary cause of allergic rhinitis is an overreaction of the body’s immune system. The immune system mistakenly perceives harmless substances as threats and reacts, releasing chemicals such as histamine. These chemicals provoke nasal congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, and a runny nose.

While there are various symptoms of allergic rhinitis, the four main ones are as follows: runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes. First, a clear, persistent runny nose is a common symptom. Second, sudden and continuous sneezing occurs. Third, the inside of the nose may swell, making it harder to breathe than usual. Fourth, in response to allergens, eyes may become red and itchy.

Severe symptoms can lead to sleep disturbances and chronic fatigue, significantly impacting daily life. Medication prescribed by a doctor is an accessible and reliable method to alleviate symptoms. Regularly cleaning the home and using an air purifier to minimize allergen exposure can also be beneficial. Avoiding excessive dryness and maintaining appropriate humidity levels are crucial.

The best approach is to prevent symptoms from occurring in the first place. The following are some prevention methods:

  1. Be prepared when going out: Wear a mask, and thoroughly wash your clothes and body after returning home.
  2. Home Environment Management: Clean your home regularly, ensure it’s dust-free, and consider using an air purifier.
  3. Adjust Diet: To strengthen the immune system, consume foods rich in vitamins C and D and drink plenty of water.

With proper management and prevention, the discomfort from allergic rhinitis can be controlled to a certain extent. However, seeking professional medical advice for a treatment plan tailored to the individual is essential.
