Post-Conviction, Trump’s War Chest Swells by Millions Thanks to Mega Donor

Daniel Kim Views

Former U.S. President Donald Trump received approximately $50 million the day after he became the first president in history to be convicted in a criminal trial.

On the 23rd, the New York Times and other sources reported that a major Republican Party donor named Timothy Mellon donated to the super PAC (Political Fundraising Group) MAGA (Make America Great Again) in support of Trump on the 31st of last month. This was the day after Trump was convicted on all 34 charges, including the sexual misconduct cover-up incident.

Timothy Mellon, an heir to a wealthy family, is known to have consistently donated large amounts to the Trump camp. The NYT reported that this donation is one of the largest in the history of political contributions in the United States.

The pro-Trump super PAC MAGA plans to spend $100 million on TV ads and other expenses by Labor Day. Super PACs operate independently of election campaigns and can freely collect and use election funds. They engage in activities such as executing large-scale advertising to support the candidate’s election campaign. MAGA is an acronym for Make America Great Again, which was Trump’s presidential election slogan.

Previously, Mellon donated $25 million each to Trump’s Super PAC, and independent candidate Robert Kennedy Jr. is known for keeping a low profile due to his lack of public activity. He became the first donor to exceed $100 million in contributions to this year’s presidential election.

Before securing the Republican presidential nomination, Trump lagged behind his competitor, President Joe Biden, in terms of fundraising. However, according to the NYT, Trump caught up with Biden as the funds raised increased after the conviction.
