Portugal’s Grand Trek: A New Pathway to Ease Tourist Congestion

Daniel Kim Views

Portugal is set to unveil the world’s longest circular trail.

According to Time Out, Portugal plans to launch a 1,864-mile circular hiking route that passes through over 100 attractions in the country. Tourists can explore various parts of Portugal through the circular route and start and finish their journey in the same location.

This massive development project, called “Palmilhar Portugal,” was produced by Ricardo Bernardes, a walking enthusiast and communication design consultant.

“Tourists tend to visit only certain areas like Lisbon and Algarve. I want to promote the beauty of small Portuguese towns through this route,” said Bernardes.

According to an official, about €3.5 million ($415,000) will be invested into this ambitious project. Palmilhar Portugal hopes to alleviate overcrowding problems at popular tourist spots in the country through the emergence of new tourist destinations.

The town of Alenquer, north of Lisbon, is a charming area with quaint houses, wineries, and vineyards. It is set to inaugurate the first section this July.

Alentejo in the center of the country will come on board next, followed by the mountainous region of Trás-os-Montes.

By the end of this year, 15 routes are expected to open across Portugal, and the entire walking trail is set to be completed in 3 years.
