Musk Claims OpenAI Misled Him: Lawsuit Unveils Shocking Allegations

Daniel Kim Views

Tesla CEO Elon Musk filed the lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman.

Musk alleges that Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman misled him during the early days of OpenAI. He claims that Altman persuaded him to invest $44 million by promising that OpenAI would continue to open-source its technologies and prioritize public interest as a nonprofit. Musk believed he was backing a nonprofit organization, but Altman later transitioned OpenAI into a for-profit corporation. Musk argues that this shift represents a betrayal of the original commitment.

The suit noted that Altman and his accomplices sought to exploit the plaintiff’s concerns about the risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) for personal gain. The plaintiff added that he believed the nonprofit structure would ensure neutrality and focus on safety and openness for the benefit of humanity. However, he later realized this was merely bait for what he described as Altman’s fraudulent activities.

Musk is suing for fraud, breach of contract, false advertising, and unfair competition. He also requests that the court assess whether OpenAI’s latest model qualifies as artificial general intelligence (AGI) and consider invalidating Microsoft’s license agreement.

Microsoft holds a non-exclusive license to OpenAI’s technology from a significant investment. However, AGI is not included in this agreement, prompting Musk to request the court to assess whether OpenAI’s latest AI model has achieved AGI status and whether the contract with Microsoft remains valid. In February, Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI and Altman in a California court, but he withdrew the case just a day before the trial.
