Snapchat Finally Launches Native iPad App After 13 Years

Daniel Kim Views

Since its launch in 2011, Snapchat’s mobile messenger app has only been available on the iPhone, with a black border around the screen when used on an iPad.

Snapchat officially released a native support specifically designed for the iPad.

This new update marks the first time in 13 years that Snapchat will fully support iPad iOS.

According to a statement released in the App Store, “Snapchat now offers native support for the iPad,” meaning it fills the entire screen, providing a larger canvas for capturing snaps and displaying more friends in the second and fourth tabs.

The new app aims to enhance accessibility on the iPad while also serving as a testing ground for tools, AR experiences, and AI on a larger screen.

However, the new app isn’t fully optimized for tablets yet, as it only works in portrait mode and cannot be used in landscape mode.

It is unclear why Snap waited so long to bring its app to the iPad or whether this move will provide a new experience for iPad users.

The launch of this native iPad app follows TikTok’s update last year, which was designed to support larger screens like iPads and tablets. With this update, Snapchat users can use the app in landscape mode, making navigation easier. By launching native support for the iPad, Snapchat is preparing to compete more directly with TikTok, which has been gaining popularity with its “Spotlight” feature.

It is worth noting that Instagram has yet to release a native app for the iPad. This delay may give Snapchat and TikTok a slight competitive edge over Meta.

Snap shares traded at $9.50 after a slight increase.
