How Warren Buffett Stays Healthy at 94: Junk Food, Good Sleep, and Happiness

Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway

Warren Buffett, the 94-year-old “Oracle of Omaha” and CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, is known for his extraordinary investing skills. Now, his unique longevity secrets are also drawing attention. He maintains his health despite indulging in junk food like hamburgers and cola daily.

On Sunday, Fortune analyzed Buffett’s secrets to staying healthy at 94 while achieving outstanding success as an investor. Recently, Buffett celebrated his birthday with a remarkable milestone: His investment company, Berkshire Hathaway, surpassed US$1 trillion in market value.

Fortune noted that Buffett’s diet is far from the typical healthy diet. He is known for his love of Utz potato sticks and drinks five 12-ounce (355ml) cans of Coca-Cola every day.

According to the 2017 HBO documentary Becoming Warren Buffett, he stops at McDonald’s every morning for breakfast, enjoying a $3.17 meal consisting of two sausage patties or a combination of eggs, cheese, bacon, and cola.

For lunch, he often visits the fast-food chain Dairy Queen for a chili cheese dog paired with a sundae topped with cherry syrup and chopped nuts. For snacks, he enjoys See’s Candies, chocolates, and sweets.

When Buffett visited South Korea in 2007, Buffett was seen choosing cola and hamburgers over hotel buffet food. He enjoyed the same meal again in 2011.

There’s also an anecdote about Microsoft founder Bill Gates being surprised when he saw Buffett eating Oreos for breakfast.

Fortune highlights that while Warren Buffett enjoys junk food, he maintains his health through a balanced lifestyle that includes adequate sleep, mental engagement, and a relaxed schedule that enhances his enjoyment of life.

In a 2017 interview with PBS, Buffett shared his fondness for sleep, noting that he aims to get eight hours each night and has no desire to start working at 4 a.m. This aligns with research from the American Heart Association, which suggests that quality sleep can contribute to a longer lifespan.

Buffett dedicates at least eight hours a week to playing bridge with friends. In an interview with The Washington Post, he explained that he plays many games and highlighted that every seven minutes presents a new intellectual challenge, calling it the best exercise for the brain.

A consistent reading habit is also cited as a key to his longevity.

According to Fortune, Buffett attributes his longevity to his gratitude and focus on pursuing what he loves. During Berkshire Hathaway’s annual shareholder meeting in 2008, he remarked that at his age, success in life is measured by how many people you want to love you actually do.

Buffett said in a 2017 CNBC interview, “I think happiness makes an enormous amount of difference…in terms of longevity. I’m happier when I’m eating hot fudge sundaes or drinking Coke.”
