According to Euronews, the tunnel’s management company, GEIE-TMB (Gruppo Europeo di Interesse Economico del Traforo del Monte Bianco), has announced that the tunnel will be closed for 15 weeks for reconstruction work on specific sections.

The closure will be in effect from September 2 to December 15. During this period, GEIE-TMB plans to demolish and completely reconstruct a 600-meter (about 1,970 feet) section in the middle of the 12-kilometer (about 7.5 mile) tunnel.

A GEIE-TMB spokesperson explained that they scheduled the reconstruction for the fall because it is the season with the lowest traffic volume. They added that during the fall, the number of light vehicles, which accounted for 68% of the total traffic in 2023, is at its lowest.

The Mont Blanc Tunnel, situated near Mont Blanc in the Alps, is a two-lane road tunnel linking Chamonix in France with Courmayeur in Italy. The toll for a one-way trip is €51.50 (about $57), while the round-trip toll is €64.20 (about $71).

The Mont Blanc Tunnel is the second deepest road tunnel in the world, at approximately 2,480 meters (about 8,130 feet). The deepest is the Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland, at around 2,500 meters (about 8,200 feet).
