Lemon8 vs. TikTok: ByteDance’s Battle for Social Media Supremacy

Lemon8

Lemon8, a social media platform owned by ByteDance, is steadily rising in the U.S. App Store rankings, according to a report from TechCrunch.

This surge is partly attributed to an increase in advertising. Lemon8 is positioning itself as an alternative if TikTok gets banned in the U.S., helping TikTok creators quickly transfer their followers in case of a ban. Although Lemon8 launched in 2020, advertising spending and influencer marketing in the U.S. only began last year.

ByteDance has proactively secured Lemon8’s place among the top 10 apps in the U.S. App Store. App intelligence firm Appfigures revealed that ByteDance has been running a large-scale app search advertising campaign over the past few weeks, utilizing more than 5,300 keywords. This campaign targets major brand keywords that dominate advertising spaces, including TikTok, CapCut, Instagram, and Canva. Also, Lemon8 has been placing ads within TikTok’s For You feed to capture the attention of potential users.

On September 14, Lemon8 recorded approximately 78,000 downloads, about 44% higher than the average over the past few weeks. Expanding its reach, Lemon8 has achieved around 16 million downloads globally this year, with nearly half—6.4 million—coming from the United States.

Amidst Lemon8’s growth, the U.S. Department of Justice has expressed concerns about ByteDance’s control over TikTok, suggesting that it could be used to influence local public opinion and access personal information.
