SpaceX, the American aerospace company, has announced plans to launch five unmanned “Starship” spacecraft to Mars within the next two years.
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk shared on X on Sunday that if all the spacecraft land safely, the company aims to carry out a crewed mission to Mars in four years. However, he noted that any complications during the unmanned landings could delay the crewed mission by another two years.
Musk also emphasized SpaceX’s commitment to significantly ramping up its efforts, stating, “No matter what happens with landing success, SpaceX will increase the number of spaceships traveling to Mars exponentially with every transit opportunity.”
Musk mentioned that the first unmanned spaceship to Mars could launch within two years once the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens. This window occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Mars are aligned, allowing for a more efficient space journey.
Meanwhile, the Starship returned without an explosion after flying in Earth’s orbit during its fourth test flight on June 4, which was a significant step closer to reaching Mars.
