Apple’s collaboration with Chinese battery company BYD on battery development for its now-canceled Apple Car project has been revealed. According to a report from Bloomberg, citing internal sources, Apple worked closely with BYD for several years, starting around 2017, to create a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery system. The partnership aimed to improve battery lifespan and safety compared to standard electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
BYD, known for its Blade Battery system, uses this advanced technology in its entire vehicle lineup, offering top-tier performance among EV batteries. While BYD did not comment on its collaboration with Apple, it stated that its engineers independently developed the Blade Battery and that the company holds full property and patent rights.
Apple had invested billions of dollars into the Apple Car project, which spanned over a decade starting in 2014. However, after numerous delays, the project was officially canceled last year.
