Ukrainian soldiers are reportedly learning Korean to interact with North Korean troops deployed to Russia.

The Times reported on Wednesday that Ukrainian forces are studying Korean phrases through handbooks for use when capturing or interrogating North Korean soldiers. The handbooks include phrases like “The Ukrainian military has captured you,” “Are you hungry?” and “Follow orders.”

A Ukrainian soldier who received the handbook told The Times that it made the North Korean troop deployment feel real. The report added that Ukraine now faces two nuclear-armed adversaries.

Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stressed at a joint press conference with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in Kyiv, “We call on Europe to realize that North Korean troops are now waging a war of aggression in Europe against a sovereign European state. This proves that while the West fears escalation and hesitates, Russia acts and escalates.”

Ukrainian military intelligence reports one Russian interpreter for every 30 North Korean soldiers. Due to communication barriers, the Times noted that Russian troops are giving their North Korean counterparts a frosty reception. Thousands of North Korean troops are currently training in Russia’s Far East on unfamiliar technologies like drones and electronic warfare. Ukrainian officials predict these soldiers will soon be deployed to the front lines.
