7 Teas That Can Help Fight Off Illnesses and Keep You Energized

wikitree Views

As temperatures swing between warm days and chilly nights, our vulnerability to colds and respiratory issues like bronchitis rises. A comforting cup of tea can offer much-needed immunity support during these transitions. Here are seven teas that bring both warmth and wellness benefits:

1. Black Tea

Globally popular, black tea delivers about 40mg of caffeine per cup and is packed with antioxidants like theaflavin and thearubigin, which may aid in lowering cholesterol. Studies suggest that drinking three or more cups daily could reduce stroke risk by up to 21%.

2. Ginger Tea

With its warm, spicy flavor, ginger tea is excellent for soothing the throat. Compounds like gingerol and zingerone help relieve coughing, phlegm, and nausea. However, it’s best consumed in moderation—cooled slightly below 140°F (60°C)—to avoid stomach irritation.

3. Quince Tea

Quince tea supports digestive enzyme secretion and boosts immunity. It’s also rich in organic acids like malic and citric, which provide antibacterial benefits.

4. Green Tea

With a lighter taste and around 25mg of caffeine per cup, green tea is known for its high catechin content, particularly EGCG, which can lower cancer risks and heart disease. A daily cup could reduce cardiovascular disease risk by up to 10%.

5. Oolong Tea

Oolong contains about 30mg of caffeine per cup and may assist with weight management by offering a balance between green and black tea in flavor. It activates enzymes that break down fat, helping to burn more calories, as shown in studies where women who drank oolong burned more calories than those who drank only water.

6. Balloon Flower Root Tea

This tea is particularly effective for respiratory health, as balloon flower root stimulates mucin production, hydrating and protecting the bronchial walls. The root’s saponin content is best preserved by leaving the skin on. To prepare, simmer 3.5 oz (100g) of root in 20 fl oz (600ml) of water.

7. Herbal Tea

Herbal teas like hibiscus, chamomile, and peppermint aren’t technically teas but offer great health perks. Hibiscus may help reduce high blood pressure, chamomile promotes sleep, and peppermint aids digestion. However, steer clear of herbal teas marketed for weight loss, as they often contain ingredients that can cause digestive issues.
