Psoriasis is a skin condition that causes red, inflamed patches of various sizes topped with silvery scales. While healthy skin cells typically complete their life cycle in about 28 days, psoriasis speeds up this process. This results in a buildup of dead cells that cannot shed quickly enough, leading to thickened, scaly skin.

Psoriasis can appear anywhere on the body, from head to toe. It often starts on the elbows and knees and spreads to the buttocks, scalp, arms, legs, hands, and feet.

Although the exact cause of psoriasis remains somewhat mysterious, experts believe it’s linked to an overactive immune system. Triggers that can set off or worsen psoriasis include dry weather, skin injuries, stress, infections, and even some medications, such as blood pressure drugs or antidepressants.

The focus of psoriasis management is alleviating symptoms and preventing flare-ups rather than a complete cure. Managing lifestyle factors that trigger psoriasis requires patience and perseverance.

Cold, dry winter weather can significantly worsen psoriasis, so it’s recommended to keep indoor temperatures between 20-22°C and humidity levels between 40-60%, with regular ventilation.

Avoid frequent bathing, use oils or soap substitutes instead of soap, and be sure to apply moisturizer after showering.

It’s also best to avoid activities that may irritate the skin, such as injuries during exercise, cuts from knives, intense scratching, or vigorous exfoliation.

Here are five foods beneficial for psoriasis:

1. Fatty fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, can help reduce inflammation.

2. Olive oil offers anti-inflammatory properties, and spices and herbs are rich in antioxidants, supporting skin health.

3. Beans and nuts provide protein and healthy fats.

4. Leafy greens and fruits contain vitamins and minerals that strengthen the immune system.

5. Whole grains are high in fiber, aiding digestion and stabilizing blood sugar levels.

On the other hand, here are five foods that are harmful to psoriasis:

1. Alcohol increases inflammation in the body.

2. Fried foods contain trans fats, which harm skin health.

3. Sugar can spike blood sugar levels, potentially triggering inflammation.

4. Refined grains lack nutrients and are not beneficial for health.

5. Fatty red meats contain high saturated fats, which may worsen inflammation.
