A senior U.S. State Department official revealed on Friday that North Korea has completed preparations at its nuclear test site for a potential seventh nuclear test and is now only awaiting a political decision to proceed.
Alexandra Bell, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability, made these remarks during a conference hosted by the Korea Society in Washington, D.C. She emphasized that such tests would significantly escalate regional tensions and seriously threaten global security.
Bell, who serves as the State Department’s representative in the U.S.-ROK Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG), referenced North Korea’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile tests. She asserted that all missile launches and nuclear threats from North Korea demonstrate its determination to advance its illegal weapons of mass destruction and ballistic missile programs.
She further stressed that this situation underscores the clear necessity to strengthen and adapt the U.S.-South Korea alliance to prepare for potential attacks, including those involving nuclear weapons.
