According to international media outlets such as Timeout, an Airbnb spokesperson revealed, “We’re planning to provide an experience where people can become Roman gladiators in the iconic Colosseum.” The Colosseum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is Rome’s most recognizable landmark. Historically famous for gladiator contests and battles with wild beasts, this ancient arena adds a layer of authenticity to Airbnb’s innovative offering.

Participants will wear historically accurate armor and wield swords as they engage in mock combat with fellow attendees inside the actual Colosseum. To heighten the immersive experience, a Summa Rudis—a retired gladiator renowned for exceptional swordsmanship—will judge the outcomes of these thrilling encounters.

The three-hour experience will be free of charge, and reservations will open on Airbnb’s official website at 6 AM on the 27th. Gladiator enthusiasts are buzzing with excitement at the prospect of becoming future gladiators.

However, this initiative has stirred controversy regarding the preservation of cultural heritage. Roman city councilman Massimiliano Smeriglio criticized the event, calling it “an insult to the historical significance of the Colosseum.” Similarly, the chair of Rome’s cultural committee, Erica Battaglia, warned that “UNESCO heritage sites should not be transformed into amusement parks.”

In response, a representative from the Colosseum Archaeological Park, which is organizing the event, defended the initiative, stating, “This event will take place outside the Colosseum’s regular opening hours and is not expected to interfere with tourists visiting the site.”
