In response to the international community’s condemnation of North Korea’s military deployment to Russia, North Korea labeled the criticism as a “joint statement that distorts and slanders the essence of normal cooperation.”

According to the Korean Central News Agency on Thursday, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of North Korea stated that this constitutes a “serious threat that undermines the foundation of international peace and security, going beyond political provocations that violently infringe upon the sovereignty of nations.” The spokesperson emphasized that the North Korea-Russia cooperation is a legitimate act against threats from the U.S. and others. However, his statement did not mention the military deployment of North Korean troops to Russia.

The spokesperson remarked, “The hostile forces’ reflexive frenzy over the North Korea-Russia relationship demonstrates that the enhanced cooperation between independent sovereign nations is highly effective in countering the malicious expansion of U.S. and Western forces and ensuring a balance of power essential for global peace and security.” He also criticized the Biden administration, suggesting that “as the current U.S. administration exits the historical stage in disgrace, we should pay attention to whom its diplomatic legacy benefits or harms.”

He added, “As long as the U.S. turns a blind eye to the changed realities and clings to anachronistic scripts, it will continue to fail in dealing with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and face new challenges.” He also asserted, “We will thoroughly defend our legitimate rights as a sovereign nation and impose no restrictions on exercising them.”

On Monday, South Korea, the United States, the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada said in a joint statement, “We condemn the increasing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, including the deployment of North Korean troops to the battlefield against Ukraine, in the strongest terms possible.
