North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his daughter Ju Ae inspected the Kalma Coastal Tourist Area, which is scheduled to open in June next year.

On Tuesday, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that Kim visited the newly constructed hotels in the Kalma coastal tourist area on Sunday. He remarked that the facilities have been developed to a high standard and can host important international events and political-cultural functions with prestige.

Kim emphasized that advancing the tourism industry will open new realms of socialist cultural development. He stressed that the construction of the Kalma coastal tourist area represents a significant first step toward propelling the country’s tourism industry to unprecedented levels of progress.

He instructed officials to meticulously develop a tourism and cultural corridor linking the Mount Kumgang Tourist Region with the Kalma coastal area. He also ordered the active development of tourism resources in other regions, including the Samjiyon area.

Kim was joined by his daughter, Ju Ae, marking her first public appearance since attending the test launch of the Hwasong-19 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on October 31. Ju Ae has grown taller and exhibited a close bond with her father, walking along the coast while holding his arm or hand. She also sat alongside Kim at the same table, listening to briefings from officials.

The Kalma coastal tourist area has been under development since 2014. It is centered around the expansive white Myeongsa Beach on the Kalma Peninsula in Wonsan. Initially scheduled for completion in 2019, the project faced delays due to international sanctions and the COVID-19 pandemic. By opening the Wonsan-Kalma Tourist Zone next June, North Korea anticipates attracting Russian tourists and generating foreign currency by opening it.
