North Korea has started its annual campaign to send scrap metal to metal factories nationwide to celebrate the New Year.

The Rodong Sinmun reported on Friday that, on New Year’s Day, hundreds of tons of scrap metal were transported from North Hwanghae Province to the Hwanghae Iron and Steel Complex. Scrap metal shipments had also been sent from several other regions, including South Hamgyong, North Hamgyong, Gangwon, Kaesong, Jagang, Nampo, North Pyongan, South Hwanghae, and Pyongyang.

The newspaper further noted that over 200 trucks filled with scrap metal were dispatched to Jagang Province on Saturday. Meanwhile, on January 2, around 360 trucks left South Hamgyong Province for metal factories.

This annual tradition involves cities and provinces across North Korea contributing scrap metal to support the country’s industrial needs at the beginning of each year.
