5 Health Risks Parents Should Avoid for Their Kids: Experts Weigh In

wikitree Views

Doctors, who are experts in understanding the human body, have some strict warnings for parents about what they should never allow their children to do for health reasons.

Dr. Shilpa Dass, a pediatric neurologist based in New Jersey, shared a list of no-nos he and eight highly specialized doctors in his circle stick to as parents.

1. Always slice grapes before serving them

In the U.S., a child dies from food-related choking every five days. Grapes are especially tricky because their smooth surface can create a perfect seal in the airway, making them tough to dislodge even with first aid.

2. Say no to ATVs for kids

All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) might seem like fun vacation activities, but don’t be fooled. From 2012 to 2021, a whopping 67,957 children in the U.S. suffered head injuries from ATV accidents.

3. Steer clear of toys with button batteries

These little power sources aren’t just a choking hazard; they can cause severe chemical burns and poisoning. Between 2011 and 2021, button batteries sent 54,300 kids to the ER and tragically claimed 25 young lives.

4. Reconsider home trampolines

They might seem harmless fun, but the numbers tell a different story. From 2009 to 2018, a staggering 800,000 children in the U.S. got hurt on trampolines. Even worse, 34% of those injuries were bone fractures, often from kids landing with outstretched arms.

5. No contact lenses for kids

Sleeping with them is a big no-no, increasing the risk of eye infections by more than five times. These infections aren’t just uncomfortable, but they can lead to vision loss and permanent scarring.
