According to a post on X, Tesla plans to update the software for the Model S and Model X by the end of the year. The Model S debuted in 2012 and received a significant update in 2021.

Launched initially to establish Tesla’s premium brand image, the Model S was followed by the more affordable Model 3 and Model Y to broaden the company’s reach. While Tesla initially projected annual sales of around 100,000 units for the Model S and Model X combined, last year’s sales figures fell short, reaching only about half of that target. Industry analysts attribute the decline to increased competition from new luxury EV players. Some critics argue that the positioning of Model S and Model X within Tesla’s lineup has become increasingly unclear.

Expectations for the upcoming updates are cautious. Based on Tesla’s past vehicle refreshes, many experts believe the Model S and Model X changes will likely be incremental rather than groundbreaking. Moreover, Tesla’s ongoing focus on ramping up Model 3 and Model Y sales suggests that any updates to its flagship models may be relatively limited. This strategy aligns with the company’s broader goal of solidifying its leadership in the mainstream EV market.
