S. Korean man found dead in Cambodia: foreign ministry

Daniel Kim Views

A security guard stands at the headquarters of Prince Group in Phnom Penh on Sunday, as the South Korean government considers imposing financial sanctions on criminal organizations amid a string of abduction and confinement cases targeting Koreans in Cambodia. (Yonhap)A South Korean man in his 50s was found dead in a hotel room in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, this week, the foreign ministry said Tuesday.

His body was found around 8 p.m. Monday (local time), and local police informed the South Korean Embassy through the Korean community leader there, the ministry said in a notice to the press.

The Korean community leader was asked to check the site and found the man’s passport, a note presumed to have been written by him and a cellphone.

The embassy also dispatched a consular official to the scene.

The discovery follows a string of abuse cases involving South Koreans lured to work for online scam rings in Cambodia, as Seoul steps up efforts to tackle the crime and bring back home its nationals implicated in the cases.

As for the latest death, however, South Korean authorities reportedly have determined that possible links to online scams are unlikely.

Cambodian police are investigating the case.

The foreign ministry said it plans to provide prompt consular assistance to the bereaved family, including support for funeral and other related arrangements. (Yonhap)
