On March 8, North Korea celebrated International Women’s Day, urging women to show loyalty to Kim Jong Un and dedicate themselves to their assigned roles.

The Workers’ Party newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, emphasized in its editorial that “Our women’s greatest fortune and utmost happiness is to respect and live under the esteemed General Secretary Kim Jong Un as the parent of our socialist family.”

The newspaper also stated, “Women should be culturally and morally beautiful and pure for the nation to become civilized, and for families and society to become healthy,” and “Women should maintain public morals, dress and groom themselves beautifully and elegantly according to the aesthetic sense of the era, and implement our style of lifestyle and moral atmosphere.”

It also urged, “People’s dignity is first formed under a mother’s hand,” and “Mothers should devote all their sincerity and effort to raising their children upright and excellent.”

North Korea commemorates March 8, International Women’s Day designated by the UN, as a national holiday and uses it as an opportunity to promote its regime.

On March 5, a meeting of women who have raised their children well, Model Mothers, took place where they shared their experiences. Celebratory performances for women, recreational games, provision of specialty foods, and the production of Women’s Day congratulatory cards followed.
