China’s State-Run Media Strongly Criticizes ‘Summit for Democracy’

“Promoting the democracy of the US, Korea takes the lead”

China’s state-run media strongly criticized South Korea regarding the “3rd Summit for Democracy” that opened in Seoul on the 18th.

According to China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency, the Chinese Foreign Ministry claimed on the 17th that the Summit for Democracy led by the U.S. is the main culprit causing division. South Korea is playing a “lapdog” role in promoting the U.S.’s neo-Cold War values.

Xinhua analyzed that the Chinese Foreign Ministry thinks this way about South Korea and the U.S. through a column titled A Summit for Democracy Unrelated to Democracy. The column criticized, “The problem is the conference itself that promotes democracy. South Korea has accepted the Summit for Democracy ordered by the U.S.,” and “South Korea is playing the role of a lapdog for the US”

Also, citing international relations experts from Singapore and the Republic of South Africa, it pointed out that there were no substantial achievements from the previous 1st and 2nd conferences. It is about how the United States tried to instrumentalize democracy and spread it worldwide, but some foreign heads of state saw through it and rejected it.

When asked about this at a regular briefing that day, Lin Jian, the new spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry, said, “I will not comment on the perspective of the press,” and “Principally, China opposes drawing lines with ideology and instrumentalizing democratic issues. Such a method is not democratic per se.” He added, “What the world needs now is not division, but unity and cooperation in line with the purpose of the UN Charter,” and “China is willing to interact based on mutual respect with each country.”
