Amidst the growing societal concern over school violence in China, some schools have installed voice detectors in CCTV blind spots, such as restrooms. These detectors are designed to detect profanity or calls for help, enabling prompt intervention.
State-run Guangming Daily reported on the 1st that such detectors have been installed in schools in various regions like Fuzhou in Fujian Province, Dehui in Jilin Province, and Zhangjiagang in Jiangsu Province.
Detectors installed in areas such as restrooms promptly alert teachers’ mobile phones or computers within 5 seconds upon detecting voices soliciting help or using abusive language.
This system has been implemented in response to the escalating severity of school violence in China, highlighted by recent incidents such as the brutal murder and clandestine burial of a 13-year-old middle school student by three classmates.
On the 10th of last month, three individuals, including Jiang Mou, students at a middle school in Feixiang District, Handan City, assaulted their classmate Wang Mou (13 years old) with such brutality that his facial features were unrecognizable. Following Wang Mou’s death, they buried him in a discarded vinyl house.
Suspicions arise of premeditation, including preparations such as digging a pit in advance, with reports indicating that the perpetrators had been regularly tormenting the victim.
