Urgent Call for Justice: South Korean President Urged to Enact Special Prosecutor Law

On May 16th, the Democratic Party urged President Yoon Suk Yeol to immediately proclaim the Special Chae Sang Byung Prosecutor Law and not waste this last opportunity.

Floor Leader Park Chan Dae said at a policy coordination meeting held at the National Assembly that day, “Make a decision as a president who upholds the honor and pride of the Marine Corps and is responsible for the lives and safety of the people.”

He continued, “There is already ample evidence of the Presidential Office’s involvement in the external pressure on the Chae investigation. It has been revealed that on the day the investigation materials were retrieved, Lee Si Won, the Secretary for Public Office Discipline at the Presidential Office, and the Legal Affairs Officer at the Ministry of National Defense had a phone call. It was also confirmed that the Presidential Office’s National Security Office requested and received investigation planning documents from the Marine Corps investigation team in July last year.”

He also said, “Public opinion overwhelmingly supports the introduction of a special prosecutor. The suspicion of the Ministry of Defense and the Presidential Office’s blatant cover-up and unfair intervention is too strong, and unless there is an independent special prosecutor from the existing power, how can the truth be revealed?”

He criticized, “There is no justification for President Yoon to exercise his veto power on the special prosecutor act. Suggesting that we wait for an investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials is akin to saying we should cover up the truth. Is it such an excessive demand to uncover the truth about the death of a young man who fulfilled his duty of national defense?”

He continued, “The President should decide to dispel the suspicions of the people and to uphold fairness and common sense. What the people want is a president who practices fairness and common sense, not an unfair president who replaces the prosecution’s investigation line and rejects a special prosecutor to cover up various suspicions related to Mrs. Kim Keon Hee.”

Floor Leader Park urged, “How long will you resist the will of the people and stubbornly hold out? Do not waste this last opportunity and immediately proclaim the special prosecutor act for the Marine Corps.”
