Police opened an investigation into a North Korean hacking organization that hacked the e-mails of high-ranking South Korean military officials.
On the 20th, a security investigation official at the police agency said, “We are investigating the hacking activities of North Korea targeting high-ranking military officials,” adding, “It is difficult to disclose the specific damage and scale as the investigation is ongoing.”
The military personnel who were victimized by the North Korean hacking attack are known to be about 100 people, including high-ranking officials of the Ministry of Defense. The military authorities identified that their private emails were attacked and requested cooperation from the police.
Meanwhile, attacks by North Korean hacking organizations are continuously occurring. On the 23rd of last month, the Security Investigation Bureau of the Korean National Investigation Headquarters of the Police Agency, in cooperation with the National Cyber Crisis Management Team, investigated a domestic defense technology leakage case and revealed that North Korean hacking organizations known as Lazarus, Andariel, and Kimsuky are making all-out efforts to steal domestic defense technology.
On the 11th, the police also discovered that North Korea had transmitted 1,014GB of court data outside the court’s computer network from January 7, 2021, to February 9, 2023.
