North Korea Escalates Tensions with ‘Trash Balloon’ Launch

Kim Joon Hyeong, a member of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy and the Justice Party, criticized North Korea’s action of sending balloons filled with waste as an “international disgrace.”

On the CBS Radio Kim Hyun Jung’s News Show on the 31st, Kim speculated, “North Korea sent waste because they believe we insulted them first. If the content of the leaflets we sent caused unrest in North Korea, they would have seen it as an insult. But as North Korea can’t tell South Koreans to come to North Korea since life there is tough, they sent the garbage to insult us.”

In response to the host’s question about the possibility of sending biological weapons later, he said, “I’m not an expert on biological weapons or military, but North Korea has many ballistic missiles that can carry biological weapons. I don’t think they would go as far as to launch them in balloons instead of using their missiles.”

Regarding North Korea’s provocations, including the launch of a ballistic missile on the morning of the 30th, Kim explained, “North Korea always has a plan. North Korea defined the state of relations between many countries as a new Cold War. It seems to be a strategy to solidify having the confrontation between North Korea and South Korea in this structure that North Korea is looking at.”

He also added, “Since the U.S. presidential election is in November, it could be a signal to Trump, who is currently seen as having a high chance of winning. Having been blindsided by Trump in Hanoi in the past, it’s a way of showing in advance that they won’t negotiate easily this time.”

Meanwhile, North Korea has been continuing provocations, starting with sending balloons filled with waste to South Korea from the night of the 28th, disrupting GPS signals from the 29th, and launching a ballistic missile on the 30th.
