Airplane U-Turn in China: How One Passenger’s Breakdown Caused a Major Delay

Daniel Kim Views

A flight heading from Shanghai to Shenzhen in China had to return to the runway due to a sudden action by a female passenger just before takeoff, resulting in all passengers disembarking.

According to Chinese local media on the 29th, the Donghai Airlines flight DZ6208, scheduled to depart from Shanghai Pudong International Airport at 11:30 PM on the 27th and arrive at Shenzhen Airport at 2:25 AM on the 28th, returned to the runway. This was because a passenger suddenly demanded to disembark as the plane was preparing for takeoff after entering the runway normally.

Furthermore, the passenger even attempted to open the aircraft door alone. When the flight attendants on the scene tried to stop her and asked why, she said she was deceived by “garbage” and wanted to cancel her trip. Despite the flight attendants’ attempts to persuade her, it was in vain, and eventually, airport police had to intervene and escort her off the plane.

According to regulations, all 170 passengers had to disembark and collect their luggage while cleaning the cabin after the return. As a result, the flight was delayed by two hours.

Donghai Airlines stated on the 29th that the flight delay was not the airline’s fault and there would be no compensation. The airline does not maintain a passenger blacklist, and how to handle problematic passengers depends on the response of the staff on site.

According to the Chinese Public Security Administration Punishment Law, a warning or a fine of up to 200 yuan (roughly $30) is imposed if the order is disrupted on public transportation.
