Chinese Company Offers $140K Bonus for Employee’s Weight Loss

Daniel Kim Views

A company in China is making headlines for offering a 1 million yuan (approx. $140K) bonus to encourage its employees to lose weight.

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Insta360, a company located in Guangdong Province in southern China, started a weight loss program for its employees on the 9th of last year.

Since then, 150 employees have participated in the program and lost 1,763 pounds, earning a reward of 98,000 yuan (approx. $13,500).

Employees participating in this program were divided into three groups and weighed every week for three months. For every 1.1 pounds lost, they received about 400 yuan (approx. $55).

However, if anyone in the group gained weight, nobody received a bonus. Furthermore, a fine of 500 yuan (approx. $70) was imposed per person. Fortunately, not a single person gained weight during the program.

Li, who participated in the program last November, said, “If you don’t lose weight, it not only affects you but also the other team members, which makes you feel guilty.” He explained that the weight loss program fosters teamwork, motivating participants to succeed together.

He lost 38.5 pounds in three months by combining daily exercises such as running, swimming, basketball, and diet control. He received a bonus of 7,410 yuan (approx. $1,020).

Xiao Chui, who successfully lost 66 pounds, received a bonus of 15,000 yuan (approx. $2,000). Another employee even yelled sarcastically upon receiving their bonuses, “This is all my fat.”

Online community users reacted positively to their program, wanting to work at the company.
