Classified Military Information Hit the Black Market

Daniel Kim Views

A South Korean social media account selling confidential military equipment information is under investigation. The authorities have launched an immediate response as it was taken seriously. According to South Korea’s Military Counterintelligence Command, posts selling military information have consistently appeared on Telegram since August last year. These posts advertise the sale of materials for the domestically produced Surion helicopter (KUH-1) and the Korean-style supersonic fighter KF-21, which is planned to be completed in 2026.

The posts include photos of the Surion helicopter and the blueprints for the KF-21. It was also reported that there were documents related to the U.S.-Korea joint military exercise “Freedom’s Shield (FS).”

The investigation began when Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) reported the case to the National Intelligence Service. The Military Counterintelligence Command is leading the investigation in cooperation with the National Intelligence Service and the police, focusing on whether the Military Secrets Protection Act has been violated.

A military official noted, “We are open to all scenarios, such as leaks by insiders or hacking, and are currently investigating with related agencies.” However, as it is an ongoing investigation, he refrained from commenting.
