China Stands with Iran: Major Powers React to Hamas Leader’s Killing

Daniel Kim Views

The head of the foreign ministry of China and Iran discussed an issue over a phone call when the tensions in the Middle East intensified following the assassination of the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. It is assumed that they agreed on various fields as they share a common stance against the U.S.

The Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Ali Bagheri Kani, Iran’s acting foreign Minister, exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East during their urgent phone call on yesterday. Wang expressed that “China has consistently advocated for justice in Middle Eastern affairs. We support all parties in safeguarding their legitimate rights and interests, particularly Palestine in reclaiming its national rights.”

He further expressed that China strongly opposes and condemns assassination attempts, describing them as serious violations of international norms and as infringements on Iran’s sovereignty, security, and dignity. He criticized these actions for jeopardizing ceasefire negotiations in Gaza and destabilizing regional peace and stability.

Wang emphasized the critical need for the international community to come together and press the conflicting parties to actively implement the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions, aiming to establish conditions conducive to an immediate and enduring ceasefire in Gaza.

“China supports Iran in defending its sovereignty, security, and national dignity by the law, and in its efforts to maintain regional peace and stability, and stands ready to maintain close communication with Iran,” Wang was quoted as saying.

In response, Bagheri Kani shared Iran’s position on the assassination of the Hamas leader and provided insights on the regional situation.

“Iran’s action is not only a defense of its own sovereignty and national security but also a defense of the stability and security of the entire region,” he said.

Bagheri Kani expressed appreciation for China’s impartial stance on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, emphasizing the hope that China would significantly reduce tensions and enhance security in the Middle East.

This call occurred while the international community closely monitored Iran’s next moves following its declaration of bloody retaliation against Israel. Western media speculate that Iran arranged this call to find justification for avoiding a full-scale war, a notion that appears largely accurate.
