Dictator or Savior? Kim Jong Un’s Surprising Aid Efforts for North Korean Flood Survivors

Daniel Kim Views

Over 13,000 North Korean residents from North Pyongan, Jagang, and Yanggang provinces have arrived in Pyongyang. The areas were heavily affected by a flood.

The Rodong Sinmun, North Korea’s state-run media, reported that “Over 13,000 children, students, the elderly, the sick, and mothers fled to Pyongyang and settled into safe houses.”

“The 4.25 Hotel and the military training base prepared educational and childcare facilities, living and relaxation spaces, as well as health and treatment services for the children and residents.” the report stated.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un personally visited the safe house to meet with several flood victims, accompanied by officials from the Party Central Committee.

During his welcoming speech, the newspaper reported that Kim mentioned the Party and government’s unwavering determination to transform the current disaster into a turning point for local development. He urged the staff at the 4.25 Hotel and the military training base to put in their best efforts. Furthermore, he expressed his hope that visitors would have a relaxing and meaningful stay in the capital.

The newspaper also highlighted Kim’s humanitarian effort, noting his visits to the children’s dining area.
