Kim Jong Un Cracks the Whip: Everyone Must Love Him, No Exceptions

Daniel Kim Views

During North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s third inspection of the flood-ravaged areas of North Pyongan Province at the end of last July, he pressed officials to strictly adhere to the reconstruction timeline by emphasizing the highest level of recovery by the upcoming December party plenary meeting. According to a report by the Korean Central News Agency on November 5, Kim inspected rebuilding sites in Eojuk-ri, Uiju County, and Hadan-ri, Sinuiju, on November 4, where he issued these directives. / Yonhap News

Following reports of North Korean troops being deployed to Russia, the Workers’ Party has ramped up calls for loyalty to Kim Jong Un, doubling down on ideological conformity. The state-run newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, has recently been using phrases such as absolute loyalty to Kim and the noble spirit of our people, indicating heightened vigilance against potential public dissent.

On Monday, Rodong Sinmun published an article titled “Absolute Trust in Our Great Leader is the Strong Pillar of Our Unity and Solidarity” to address growing public unrest.

The article emphasized that the foundation of our unity and solidarity is rooted in the collective will of the people, which is fundamentally an absolute trust in our great leader. It added that unwavering faith is the most powerful and noble force in revolutionary struggles and throughout human life.

It further insisted that our people’s trust in Kim Jong Un is based on unshakeable faith in Kim’s greatness and a firm conviction in the legitimacy and invincibility of the revolutionary cause he leads.

The newspaper reinforced these themes, lauding the people’s resilience and alignment with the Party Central Committee’s goals, which it claimed ensured all victories and glory under Kim’s guidance.

In a rare nod to economic hardships, Rodong Sinmun recently spotlighted child welfare policies and local development efforts, portraying Kim as a benevolent leader tirelessly working for the people’s prosperity and future.

This recent series of articles emphasizing internal loyalty and indoctrination seems to be a desperate attempt to prevent public dissent. Foreign media reports indicate that North Korean troops have been deployed to the front lines of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, resulting in casualties. To counter the spread of this information and growing discontent, North Korea has implemented draconian isolation policies, including the forced relocation of families of deployed soldiers.
