  • Kim Jong Un Emphasizes That All Three Priorities Are War Readiness North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has emphasized war readiness while observing an airborne troop drill. The North's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported on March 16 that Kim led a drill on March 15 for the Airborne Land Warriors. The drill was aimed at "inspecting the readiness of the airborne soldiers to be mobilized according to arbitrary operational prayers issued under unjust wartime conditions," the news agency said, describing the drill as "transport planes flying over the training grounds and combatants raining down on the virtual enemy lines like hailstones." "The basic task of the People's Army is first, second, and third, to prepare for war," Kim said, ordering that "every soldier in the entire army must be strongly armed with a firm confrontational will and a thorough war outlook, with the determination to change the course of history if war breaks out." "Even if the People's Armed Forces conduct a single drill, only when it is directly related to war can it prepare the soldiers as real fighting forces who will unconditionally fight and win in the solemn battlefield of life and death in the event of an emergency," he said. "The recent major drills have shown that our armed forces, which are directly responsible for the conduct of war and are the basic capability of national defense, are not only thoroughly prepared for war in every aspect, but also have a firmly established combat mobilization posture with a determined main enemy perspective." Kim was accompanied by Vice Chairman of the Party's Central Military Commission Pak Chung Chun and received on the ground by Defense Minister Kang Soon Nam, Chief of the General Staff of the Korean People's Army Ri Young-gil, Commander of the Air Force, and the commander of the 11th Army Corps. Kim Jong Un has been inspecting military exercises in response to the U.S.-South Korea joint military drills "Freedom Shield" (FS), which were held from April 4-14.
