Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, announced on the 11th (local time) on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that he plans to release the source of the AI chatbot Grok this week, according to The Wall Street Journal (WSJ). The article did not specify which parts of Grok will be open-sourced.

Musk’s AI startup, xAI, which he founded in July last year, initially distributed the AI chatbot Grok, similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, to X users in December of the same year.

Musk’s mention on the day is interpreted more as a move to pressurize Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, rather than simply making Groq available for everyone to use.

On the 29th of last month, Musk filed a lawsuit in the San Francisco Superior Court demanding that AI technology be open-sourced. He alleges that OpenAI and Altman violated their non-profit promise at the time of their establishment. Musk, who had funded OpenAI in its early days, left the company in 2018.

Altman has also struck back. On the 5th, OpenAI published an email exchange with Musk in a blog post, claiming that Musk had supported OpenAI’s transition to a for-profit business.

OpenAI also pointed out that Musk had tried to take a significant stake and management rights in OpenAI, even suggesting a merger with Tesla.

The WSJ explained, “Open-sourcing Grok could have commercial motives,” and “An open-source version could encourage developers and potential customers to use the AI more quickly. In other words, it can essentially serve a marketing role.”
